Bomb alert closes part of Germany's Munich airport

Part of southern Germany's Munich airport has been closed down after a traveller fled when his laptop set off an explosives detector.

Terminal 2 was sealed off as a search was mounted for the man who ran into a secured area, police said. Initial reports said explosive traces had actually been found but later accounts could not confirm this. About 12 flights to destinations in Germany and abroad have been delayed, an airport spokesman said. Munich airport, situated about 30km (20m) north-east of the city, is the second busiest airport in Germany.

'Not 100% clear'

The incident occurred at about 1530 (1430 GMT), police told German media. "The explosives detector in security control was set off by the laptop and, as it was being put through a second time, the man disappeared," a police spokesman told German broadcaster n-tv. "It is not 100% clear that there were in fact explosives," said federal police spokesman Berti Habelt.

A police spokesman quoted by AFP news agency cautioned that the scanner could have been set off by chemicals such as perfumes, and that the man might simply have been in a hurry to catch his plane. Airports around the world have been on heightened alert since an alleged attempt to blow up a US airliner flying from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day.
